Documenting a Day

The activities for Week 2 Assignment 1 required me to document a day in my life through several commonly used applications that can be found in most organizations, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Although the activity did not indicate a need to work with a database, I have worked with several database platforms in the past, such as Microsoft Access and SQL Server. Microsoft Word is primarily used for creating and revising documents. It is designed as a word processor, which is a “common computer application for creating formatted text” (Vahid & Lysecky, 2017). Excel is a powerful spreadsheet application that can be used for analyzing data and more. PowerPoint is an application that allows one to create rich and dynamic presentations. Each one serves a special purpose, but often they can be used to serve many different use cases. For example, although one may default to using Microsoft Word for journaling, others might consider using PowerPoint because of its ability to import and place graphics anywhere on the page easily. Thus, a creative individual might find that PowerPoint is a more effective tool for journaling. With that said, for most, Microsoft Word may be the appropriate choice for journaling because it lends itself well to writing documents. It has rich controls for editing text, fonts, line spacing, and other type formatting controls. While each of the applications is fantastic for specific purposes, they also have disadvantages. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint work amazingly well on the Windows and Mac OS platforms. However, they do not work natively on Linux platforms and require special software to run them, e.g., desktop virtualization software.
